Back to Winter, cold, wet and windy. I hope you are warm, dry and cozy. Great weather for yarn though.
Well last week we promised to share some of our new yarn with you, so here goes!
Malabrigo! I’m starting with Malabrigo mostly because they are a particular favorite of mine. I also now know the correct pronunciation. Maul ah bree go. However you pronounce it the yarn is wonderful.
I love the company too they have great history, if only a short one so far. They were established in 2005 in a small kitchen in Uruguay. I would be happy to tell you more but I don’t want this email to be a book. Ask me sometime. As you know we have carried quite a few of their yarns before but have just added a couple more. First of all we have:
Mecha –A rare single-ply 100% super wash Merino wool. This yarn takes the color in the most vivid, rich way with multi-layered hues. As always with Malabrigo, it is extremely soft with a slight thick and thin texture. It has fantastic loft and is perfect for quick but not too heavy projects. This is great yarn for; accessories, garments, baby and kids items, cables and textured stitches. This yarn is on the bulky side with 130 yards to the 100gram skein. The gauge is 11 – 13 sts to 4” and the recommended needle size is 10 – 11. Hook size K – M. Please make sure to buy enough for your project as each bag is a different dye lot. With some colors even the individual skeins can be different. This is what makes the colors so incredible. If you want to ensure the random color distribution in your project you should work from two balls at once, alternating a few rows from each ball.
Mora – Pure Mulberry silk. The ultimate in luxury! This is a four-ply fingering weight yarn, as strong as it is soft. The pure silk takes the dyes with an unparalleled richness, the colors will blow your socks off. This yarn is great for; Shawls, scarves, fine garments, and little luxuries. As always with Malabrigo yarn be sure to get enough of the same dye lot and follow the two ball rule. The yardage of these skeins is 225 yards to 50 grams, 28 -30 sts to 4”. Recommended needle size is a 1 – 2. Hook size B – D. It should be hand washed cold, and dry flat.
This company dates back to 1950 when the current president of the company’s grandfather started it. It quickly became and has remained the most recognized yarn brand in Turkey. In 2004 their yarns were introduced to the USA when our knitters and crocheters began to enjoy the quality and distinctive yarn they offer. They have a unique collection, and great yardage. The price is right too. Glitz Glamour, and Luxury. This is also a company that gives back. Feel free to ask me more about them some time!
Alp Natural – This yarn is actually not new to us as we have had it in the store before but only a few skeins on a trial basis. Now we have bigger selection with great colors and more ideas for it. This yarn is a blend of 40% cotton, 40% viscose, 10% linen and 10% silk. It is characterized as a DK weight with 4 sts to the inch on a size 9. Because of its make up, this yarn is good for a variety of spring, summer and special occasion projects. It also has a good selection of free patterns.
Well a somewhat new addition to yarn companies. Madeline’s thoughts began in 2005, she started her first on line shop on Etsy in 2006 and now supplies yarn to stockists around the globe, from Iceland to Japan, and Australia to Alaska. Now you know why we have to wait so long for it.
All of Madeline’s yarn is locally dyed in Texas (she lives in Fort Worth). They are made of All Natural Fibers, hand crafted using traditional methods in small dye batches. The wool is ethically sourced from Peru and South Africa, has low impact organic compound dyes.
We have just re stocked the Pashmina, Merino Light, and Sock. You should see the sock section now! If you would like more specifics on any of these lines please let us know.
They have been in business for more than 10 years. This company’s members are all needle crafters who understand what we are looking for in our yarn. They offer high quality yarns with a broad array of colors with incredible softness and fashionable design.
Our new lines from them are, Bamboo Pop, and Fibra Natura Good Earth.
Bamboo Pop is a blend of 50% cotton and 50% bamboo. It contains 292 yards of DK to light worsted weight yarn knit on size 5, 6, or 7 needles or crochet on hook size G, H, or I. Machine wash warm and dry flat
Fibra Natura Good Earth comes in both solids and multi colored options. This is a blend of 53% cotton and 47% linen a medium weight, worsted or aran. It calls for needle size 7,8, or 9 or hook size I, J, or K.
With both of these yarns, the blends of cotton and bamboo or cotton linen are really nice to work with. They are easy on the hands and make a great finished project. Both are great for warm weather garments for kids and adults alike.
Wow, I could ramble on about yarn forever. I can talk about how yarn is made, the companies that make it, the animals and plants yarn come from… If only I had more hours in the day.
I will leave you for now. I hope you have a fantastic week; looking forward to seeing you soon.
