Wonderful Weather & Yarn Hop

Wonderful Weather & New Yarns

Sebastopol Yarn Store

Good Morning, once again, how are you? Are you enjoying this wonderful weather? I certainly am. Some knitters long for the cold days, so that they can wear all the lovely sweaters they made. I wear mine year-round on those chilly mornings and cold nights.

I have enjoyed making some simple tops though and have some great yarn with which to do so.   Just in, some new to the store yarn from Universal, Rozetti Lumen. Perfect for the latest drop stitch top I made. Come in and check it out.

Yarn Hop Only Days Away

Yarn Hop

Well this is the week; the Yarn Hop is only days away. We will soon be stuffing the goodie bags with all sorts of must haves for the yarnies that we are. I think you will be extremely happy with the offerings. The Yarnitudes Grand Prize is put together and coming together nicely. Each store will have its own Grand Prize so make sure to take note of the one you would like to put your completed passport in to win. There is a space on the back of the passports this year for your name and phone number along with a box to check for the prize you want.

We will of course have lots of door prizes as always and some snacks too. You never know who may drop in too. Some people are organizing car pools, it is sure to be a wonderful weekend. I have also managed to snag some buy one get one free deals from of the local merchants. I will also be raffling the collaborative cowl that I knitted. And I have just a few kits to purchase, first come first serve on those. Get in early check out the cowl, see what you think. We will have some of our only at Yarnitudes things too. So much fun, all I need is a little time to finish up everything.

Books on Sale 75% OFF

Sonoma County Yarn StoreI have been going through the books, you do know that we still have some at 75% off? One that I really like that we have a few of is, A gathering of Lace. This is put together by Meg Swansen. This is comprised of 34 lace knitters’ secrets and their favorite projects. The pictures are amazing, even if you are not a lace knitter this book will make you want to start.

The projects go from knitting with a fine lace weight to a more robust yarn. Never be afraid of lace or the weight of the yarn so many options are available. In this book, you will see patterns from small accessories to full blown garments.

Many of which will or at least could become family heirlooms. There are also some great projects for, special occasion gifts. Weddings, or absolutely gorgeous hostess gifts. You give one of these to a host and you will be invited back often.

Gorgeous Lace Weight Yarn

Sonoma County Yarn StoreYou may have noticed that we have a wonderful selection of lace weight yarn in the store too. Whether you decide to use it as one strand or put multiple strands together the colors and styles are a joy to behold.

You remember I was away from the shop for a couple of weeks, a couple of weeks ago? Well I have the projects I was working on then, finished and out on display. Quite a few one skein projects, both knit and crochet, it is amazing how much fun you can have with a skein or two of yarn. I don’t think any of them took more, than four or five skeins at the most.

Relax & Breathe When You Knit

Sonoma County Knitting ClassesMy tip for this week is – Try to remember when you are relaxing with your project, yes, I said relaxing; to take a breath now and again. I often have to remind people to breathe, and take a break. Especially when it is all new to you. Your stitches will be more even, you won’t have so many aches and pains, and you will also enjoy the result as well as the progress much more.

Stretch those arms, fingers, back, neck often. Your body will thank you for it. Don’t watch scary movies when you are working on something tricky. You will notice how what you are watching while you are working on your project will show in your work.

For a wonderful summer knit tunic that can do well in your fall wardrobe also, we found this beautiful Chevron Knit Tunic, a free pattern download: http://intheloopknitting.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Chevron-lace-top.pdf

OK well now to get back to my preparations for the hop. I have another pattern to write up. The story of the Cotati Cockerel and a whole host of other things waiting for me to finish. See you soon, have a great week, Hugs ~ Trudy

Nurture, Knit & Savor Life!

Take Time to Smell the Roses & Nurture Yourself

Happy Monday to all,

Sonoma County Yarn ShopWe are well into June with graduations, Father’s Day and so much hurry in all our lives. Take the time to smell the roses and slow your life down a little. It’s very important to be able to distinguish tasks that are urgent from the important. With good planning and pacing there are less urgent tasks in our lives, just a hint.

A friend posted to Facebook this morning that she wan’t going to tackle what had to get done today, but she was taking her daughter who has Lyme to the beach for a few hours. Becky was packing snacks, a couple of magazines and books, drinks, blankets and sunscreen and saying goodbye to her to-do-list for the day. Sometimes you just have to take a vacation from it all. She encouraged each of us in our Facebook group to slow down today and catch a moment and post it to the group, so here is mine to the left.

So much beauty all around us, but it takes slowing down a little to really appreciate all the wonderful small things in our life.

Vitamin D & Knitting

Vitamin D is so important in all our lives for staying healthy in so many ways. But very few people realize that without time out in the sun, at least 15 minutes a day, that Vitamin D is not activated in our bodies. It’s interesting as our lives have become more indoor and less outdoors over the decades that depression, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and dementia are becoming more prevalent in our lives. So take your knitting outside for 15-20 minutes a day, relax, soak up some vitamin D and do what you love to nurture not only your body but your spirit!

Yarn Hop is Coming

Yarn Hop

Lots of wonderful specials and fun activities are planned for Yarn Hop weekend: Saturday July 22nd and Sunday July 23rd-a not to be missed event! So mark your calendars now and get your girlfriends together and make a day of it!

The Fun of Knitting Pattern Adaptions

Sebastopol Yarn ShopSonoma County Knitting ClassesOne of my favorite activities is taking what I like from one pattern and adding that style into another pattern. An example for you is to the left and to the right. and I think we could have a terrific class teaching these techniques, just let us know if you are interested. I will confess that I rarely knit a pattern the way it is written or in the fiber that it is suggested. Do I want to make life hard, no, I just enjoy being creative! So with a little luck and ingenuity you can take a sleeve from one pattern, a neckline from another, a border treatment from another pattern and create a truly unique pattern that is just yours!

OK, I made a mess of my closet finding the finished top, but you can see the radical difference going from what is a not great looking tunic to a tunic that is really adorable and gets lots of compliments. I switched up the yarn, sleeve treatment, and also the pattern so the finished tunic is something that is truly unique. These are techniques that anyone with intermediate knitting skills can take on and have fun with. We would enjoy seeing your unique creations, just send them to trudy@yarnitudes.com

For Our Crocheters

As Trudy has said, we are getting more and more crocheters coming to the store, so this week I found a really pretty crochet pattern for a beach cover up. There are just some things you can do in crochet that are tougher to do with knitting. If you are looking for airy intricate patterns, crochet is the easier way to go. Here is the link to the free pattern: http://beautifulcrochetstuff.com/crochet-beach-cover-up-pattern/

The pattern is our featured top image this week. So many yarn choices in the store that would work up beautifully in this pattern.

A happy summer to you and keep those needles busy-Tamara

Trendsetter Yarn Tasting

Sebastopol Knitting ClassesWell let’s start by having fun with the Trendsetter Yarn Tasting this coming Saturday, boy did that come around quickly. There are a few spaces left so grab them quick and come and join us for an enjoyable few hours playing with some fantastic new yarn, and help influence some of the yarn I purchase.

We will have a prize for the most interesting use of the yarns we will be tasting. Thirteen different yarns to be exact. There will be a nice selection of the knitter’s pride knitting needles and crochet hooks for you to test out as well. This isn’t just for knitters.

While you are here, you can check out the 60% off books, there isn’t just a few, we have a lot to choose from, also some fantastic specials and don’t forget to get your name in for the anniversary drawing which will be chosen at the end of May.

More Crocheters Are Showing Up

Due to the fact, we are getting more and more crocheters in the store I am finishing a cute summer top that is really easy, and a lot of fun to make, just chains, single and double crochets. I am working it up in Queensland Savanah, another amazingly nice yarn, blending 66% silk and 34% linen. There are 250 yards per 100g, a nice weight for both knitting and crochet. This is a yarn that was in a tasting we had last year and proved to be very popular so we decided to carry it this year.

We Are Now Moved-So Glad!

Santa Rosa Movers

I am relieved to say we are now moved into our new home, for the coming year at least. There were a few days there that it was a challenge to say the least. The worst thing was not having the time or space to knit at home. Finding things is another ongoing challenge. It is a bit like trying to fit a gallon into a pint pot. We have donated so much to goodwill and thrown so much ‘stuff’ out but we still need storage for somethings.

Hopefully we can start the search for our forever home very soon. WITHOUT stairs and hills. I am amazed at how strong the movers were, 4 men working from 8am to 5.30pm with hardly a break, carrying large pieces of furniture up and down negotiating tight corners and they still managed to keep smiling and whistling. We will certainly be calling them again when it is time to move into the next place. It certainly was not an easy move.

Reviews Matter

Sonoma County Yarn StoreI just want to share something with you, something that can affect my business, and something that I don’t think people often think about. Reviews. Recently I received a review from someone who has never set foot in our store. It is our store, without you I wouldn’t be here. They saw my car which was not being driven by me at the time and assumed that the driver was the owner of Yarnitudes. This person writing the review had been driving erratically and extremely fast, so I was told, and didn’t like the fact she was unable to pass the driver of my car.

Without any knowledge or consideration given to the affect this may have on us, she posted a bad rating on Yelp. While it takes many good reviews to keep us in good standing it only takes one bad one to bring that down. If it is a bad review about what we did as a business that would be one thing, we are not perfect and I need to know if I am doing something that people don’t like, but for something that had absolutely nothing to do with the shop is really upsetting.   So, I ask if I do something wrong, please tell me so I can correct it, If I make you happy, please tell everyone else.   Sorry for my little rant but I needed to share.   I am over it now, thanks for listening.

Yarn Hop Is Coming!

Yarn Hop

The Yarn Hop preparations are moving along nicely. Don’t forget to help us spread the word and make this the best ever. If you know somewhere to hang a poster let us know and we would love to give you one to share. The Hop is a great way to spread the word about knitting and crochet, in fact all fiber arts. Help us to keep centuries old crafts alive.

I am almost finished with the Hop cowl, we have all of the stitch patterns together now. I have done mine in 5 colors, one for each store, then I will be making one in a tonal yarn just so you can see the difference. Be sure to collect the individual stitch design from each store. Samples will be on display very soon. I will be offering a limited amount of (4) kits using the colors I chose, first come first served.

Our free knitting pattern this week, is a wonderful summer top with open work. We have lots of wonderful yarn that would make this into a stunning top: https://www.garnstudio.com/pattern.php?id=7895&cid=17

So much to do and so little time, so I will leave you now this week and hope to see you very soon. Take care and enjoy every moment. Happy yarning, until next time ~ Trudy
