Mother’s Day & Yarn Hop Coming

Sebastopol Knitting Classes

Hi there, Monday again. How are you this week?

Sonoma County Yrn ShopTax Day is now behind us for another year, although we never stop paying do we? I really do enjoy living here, but just saying California seems to raise the price. With at least one exception Yarnitudes, doesn’t charge any more here than anywhere else in the USA.

I couldn’t believe it, yesterday I was pricing a new bed. After giving me the price, the sales man said, “Oh plus $100, just for the privilege of living in CA, + $11 disposal fee for the mattress and another $11 for the base, this is the CA recycling fee, plus tax of course” That had nothing to do with the bed itself, or the $180 delivery cost. Crazy huh?

Mother’s Day is Coming

Sonoma County Knitting ClasssesDo you realize it is only three weeks to Mother’s Day? Still time though to whip up a little something for the special Mom in your life. Did you see that I actually said Mom and not how we say it in the UK, Mum! Mother’s day in England is on a different day than here in the good old U S of A. The UK one was back in March. It has only taken 35 years for me to let go of that spelling.

Is there a special mom in your life you would like to make something for? Or perhaps there is a little something here in the store that you would like for yourself. What better time to get it? As always, we have gift certificates, or you can tell us what you would like and as we do at Christmas, tell your family and friends to give us a call or come in as we know what you would really like. We also have last minute gifts too, necklaces, bracelets, mugs, scarves etc, etc.

My Hubby’s Birthday

Sonoma County Knitting Classes

Today is also my Hubby’s birthday, this is a big one! Happy Birthday to my best friend.

Have you got your Uluru yet? Well now we have free patterns with purchase, really pretty. Madeline will be teaching her feather and fan, scarf or shawl next month. Saturday 13th May from 11am to 1pm, check it out.

Check Out Our New Classes

Sebastopol Knitting Classes

Speaking of classes, don’t forget the classes coming up this week – Felted bag, the first shell class, Socks, and next month the requested dog sweater classes.

Yarn Hop is Coming

Yarn Hop

The Yarn Hop plans are starting to come together. This year, as well as the things we did last year, we are making a cowl. This is a progressive pattern. Each store has come up with a stitch design and this will be available when you visit each store. Visit all 5 stores, yes, this year there are 5 participating, and each store will give you their own portion, by the end of the hop you will have the whole design. Each store will have a finished cowl on display, just to whet your appetite. This will give you an idea of how each design pairs with the next. As the designs can be knitted in any order, any color or colors. Fun eh?

Well as you can see we are planning lots of fun here for the future, so I had better get back to it.

Our featured free pattern this week can be found at this link: http://www.berroco.com/patterns/route-1  and the website that featured the pattern made up in sock yarn instead of DK, is this site: http://thedrizzleofhoney.blogspot.com/2016/08/route-1-summer-sweater.html#more

Until next week then, take care and keep those fingers busy ~ Trudy

Happy Easter & Moving Again

Sonoma County Yarn Shop

Good Morning, I hope this finds you well and happy.

Yes, soon to be Easter, just a few more days, do you have anything planned? Will it be a busy weekend or will you be relaxing on your own or with friends and family? I have a lot going on at the moment. Not only at the shop but at home too.

Home & Moving Again

Don’t worry, not the shop. Preparing to move to a temporary home while we get our home ready to sell, and then the job of finding our new permanent and hopefully forever home. So many moves over the years, it’s crazy when I think about it. One thing I know for sure it never gets any easier. Where we live now is the longest we have lived anywhere together. In fact, apart from moving out of my parents’ home at the age of 20, the house I was actually born in, this is the the longest I have ever lived anywhere.

Still there comes a time for really settling down. I thought we had done that 12 years ago, but we were younger then and the big house was just what we wanted, now, we realize that we want to go back to a smaller cozy place. So, as I sit here writing to you today I am surrounded by boxes. What to keep and what to let go, a hard question. People used to ask me where home is? My answer then and will always be – where my cats are.

Thankful for My Crafts & Gardening

Have you moved around a lot? So many things change but then so many are just the same. Thank goodness for my yarn, cross stitch, paints, books, gardening etc. etc. This will be the last Easter in our present home. Lots of memories. Our granddaughters were only little when we moved here, Olivia 6 and Victoria 8, now they are young women. Gone are the days of the Easter Egg hunts, happy memories though.

Beautiful Summer Yarn is Here

Sonoma County Knitting ClassesSo now spring is definitely here, although we haven’t quite finished with the rain. If only it would just rain at night while most of us are sleeping, I don’t want much, do I? it is time to be working on those summer tops and shawls etc. and we have an enormous array of summer weight yarn. A full color range of cotton, linen, silk and mixtures, you are sure to find just what you are looking for.

As always, we have plenty of samples and suggestions in the store, Linda Will be teaching a lovely top down shell too. Some people think the samples in the shop are very difficult but really if you can knit and purl, or chain and double crochet, they are within your reach. As always someone will be here to help you every step of the way.

One of the tops that gets a lot of attention is a basic shell done in the Ripple yarn. Just 4 balls, three different colors and a basic pattern is all you need. The yarn and a little imagination does the rest. We have at least two new knitters who are knitting top down cardigans at the moments, they are having a ball and excited by the whole experience. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Washing Superwash Wool

Sonoma County Knitting ClassesSonoma County Yarn ShopSomething that has just been brought to my attention Important is washing superwash wool. With the new high efficiency washing machines that use much less water, you need to take extra steps when using this yarn. The lack of water and therefore the more agitation can cause felting.

Therefore you must use the soak option, or the handwash wool option to avoid this. Best advice, put garment inside a lingerie bag or light pillow case, wash alone and keep an eye on the water level. Never wash with heavy items, i.e. towels, jeans etc. You may want to think about this too with store bought items when washing. I hope this helps, if in doubt contact the manufacturer.

Why Do We Knit or Crochet?

Why do we knit? Why do we crochet? Well apart from the reason that it feels good, have you thought about why you started? I started when I was young because I was taught at school, it was a desirable craft to know. To take forward and share with the new generations to come. It was also a way to decorate our homes and clothe us in times of hardship. Repurposing garments and such. Fishermen mending their nets etc. Today though with the overabundance of everything those reasons have taken a back seat, for many.

Everything We Create Is Unique

Sonoma County Knitting ClassesIt is still great though, that we don’t just have to go with the same thing everyone else has. One of a kind, something you have created for yourself, a friend, a loved one. Something you have invested time energy and love into. One of my very first custom pieces was for a woman looking for just the right color cardigan to go with an outfit she had.

She was renewing her wedding vows and had found just the right dress to wear but it was a little too revealing, she thought, for the church. So together she told me what she wanted and we went over color charts to find the exact color she wanted.

Then came the buttons, something sparkly, a little lace here, a texture there, etc. She ended up with just what she wanted. Had she been able to knit herself she could have saved some money and been entertained all at the same time.

Color and Unique Fashion Statements

I love having clothes that match and complement each other and so often you just can’t find it. Color trends change but my color choices don’t always equal the trends. I love color and sometimes I want yellow, sometimes I feel more like teal, orange or pink. It is great to know that I can have whatever color I want and I don’t have to have fashion dictate my choices.

Sebastopol Knitting Classes

Then of course are the feel-good reasons.

The Beauty of Lace Weight Yarn

Does Lace weight yarn scare you? Don’t let it. I wrote about this a long time ago but it doesn’t hurt to refresh it. We have some fantastic lace weight yarn in the store. The yardage is amazing and most really good value for the money. If you would like to have something super fine and light use one strand. If you would like something warm and snuggly but not heavy, you can use two, three, four or more strands held together.

The loft is then truly amazing. A whole different look than using a chunky or bulky yarn. And using different color strands can also add interest. Mixing a solid with a hand paint or variegated can also have an entirely different effect. Mixing two variegated together though can cause a muddy effect so, be careful with this one.

Choosing Project Colors

Sebastopol Yarn ShopSonoma County Knitting ClassesTalking about colors leads me to my next topic. Choosing the right color for a project. Are you someone who sees something, a pattern or design and just must have it look exactly the same? Have you ever thought that the color on the pattern may not be the color that would be good for you, or are you the type that only looks for patterns in the colors that you like? That can be extremely limiting. Perhaps it would be better to see patterns in shades of grey. Then you can let your imagination put a color to it.

Sometimes patterns that are worked up in black do not do justice to the item. You can’t always see the detail in black, cables don’t stand out the same way and they are very difficult to photograph. Solid colors do however make the designs pop.

Sonoma County Knitting ClassesLikewise, on hand paints and variegated yarn too much detail is just wasted as it gets lost in the mix. Sometimes that kind of yarn is just best in very simple stitches, the yarn will do everything else. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

One of our regulars came in the other day with a dress she was making for a little girl. It was being knitted in three different colors. Lesley was there and she said, “that looks great, I would never of thought of putting those colors together, but it works really well”. Try playing with some left overs. Its fun.

Well I think that is enough for another week, so I will love you and leave you until next time. Don’t forget to keep checking out the classes. We have added some and are working on the rest, hopefully we will get it on the website soon, if not call us and tell us what you are looking for.

Take care, and be happy

Hello March & Wine Tasting

March Is Here

Good Monday morning again. Hope this finds you well and happy.

Sebastopol Yarn Store

Welcome to March, I hope no winds, we have had enough of the March winds and April Showers already this year, I am ready for the May flowers.

So Thankful for 35 Years with My Best Friend & Hubby

Yesterday I celebrated 35 years with my best friend and hubby. Thirty-five years, where on earth does the time go? It seems like just yesterday when we met, actually that was just over thirty-five and a half years ago. Although we disagree on the actual first time we met. That is another story. We have certainly seen a lot of changes and travelled many, many miles during the time we have been together. I am happy to report, we are still best friends. I know how lucky can some people get?

Time Is Like a River

Talking about years, and all that happens over time, it never ceases to amaze me how much can change in the blink of an eye or even in a day. Recently my mum was in the hospital with a nasty chest infection. I had only been skyping with her a couple of days beforehand. Then I was getting reports of how sick she was, and even messages from my brothers saying how concerned they were. Then overnight the story changed, she was over the worst and would soon be going home. Not the first time my mother had us scared.

Last week I was on Facebook and it came up with the “this time last year “pictures and there was my mum, cast on her wrist and singing ‘Que Sera Sera’ on video to my daughter. I believe that sense of whatever will be will be has rubbed off on me. Live the best way you can, make the most of every opportunity and just go for it. I think my daughter has inherited that philosophy too. Enjoy every day!

It will soon be St Patrick’s day again, we have some great Irish themed hat patterns available, and lots of green yarn to knit them in.
